Country: Australia
Organization: RedR Australia
Start date: 16 Aug 2023
End date: 20 Aug 2023
Registration deadline: 14 Aug 2023

Humanitarian workers are increasingly exposed to challenging, insecure, remote or hostile environments due to lawlessness, political instability and armed conflict, so there is a compelling need for them to be adequately prepared for any dangers they may encounter.

Sexual harassment, interactions with aggressive armed combatants, day light robbery and traffic accidents are realistic threats for humanitarians and aid workers. All field workers should be adequately prepared for these events and be proficient in establishing and maintaining telecommunications, whether working in a safe or hostile situation. Conscious of the varying needs within the sector, RedR Australia seeks to address the concerns of a range of organisations and individuals and their insurance providers. These include relief, development, research and advocacy organizations, operational agencies and agencies that are not directly operational but provide support to community based organisations and locally based NGOs.

RedR Australia's HEAT course includes integrated Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) training by Real Response. Real Response will deliver a combination of theory and practical based emergency medical training, giving participants the skills and knowledge to manage ballistic, penetrating and blast trauma. A few of the skills learned in TECC include commercial and improvised tourniquets and haemorrhage control, airway management of an unconscious casualty and an array of improvised techniques teaching students how to save and preserve life with limited resources. Participants will leave the course with the skills and knowledge to provide aid and operate in hostile environments around the world.

Participants will receive a TECC Level 1 Certificate issued through Real Response. The course content is recognised through Committee for Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (C-TECC).

In any humanitarian crisis, communities need access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation and hygiene.

Water-borne diseases are major killers in disasters and complex emergencies. They can occur where large populations are displaced, or where local infrastructure has been destroyed by a natural hazard or conflict.

This course will introduce you to the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector in emergencies, and is designed for those who want to benefit from industry-leading WASH engineering practice.

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the components of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in emergencies for humanitarian workers. It is ideal if you are already involved or likely to be involved in public health and WASH programming, as a field officer, coordinator and/or decision maker.

You are expected to have a base level understanding of WASH issues. The course suits water, environmental and public health engineers, WASH project managers, and public or environmental health specialists involved in emergency responses. It is also suitable for those with technical skills oriented toward large-scale urban systems, who want to adapt their skills to humanitarian emergency work, as well as anyone who has already worked or volunteered in emergency relief and wants to improve or learn new public health engineering skills.

The course is in English and a reasonable proficiency is required by participants.

As the private sector increases investments in agricultural areas, the impacts on smallholder farmers as a result of weak land governance structures can compromise household resilience and even community food security.

Despite these challenges, USAID acknowledges that agricultural investment in land and other resources are happening in many developing areas and will likely continue into the foreseeable future.

This Ag Sector Council seminar will introduce, USAID's “Operational Guidelines for Responsible Land-Based Investment,” a new tool to help practitioners and private sector partners navigate the complex issues surrounding local land rights. Additionally, our presenters will explore ways that practitioners can mitigate the negative effects of large-scale land acquisitions and ensure that smallholders and their communities remain food secure.

The National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership partnership - Concern Worldwide U.S., International Medical Corps and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative - brings together a unique combination of operational, pedagogical, and technical expertise with a deep understanding of the international humanitarian architecture and the NGO community. Since launching in 2016, NNPHL has offered leadership training to mid-career humanitarian professionals working nearly all of today's most complex emergencies. Now in its fourth year, NNPHL is excited to offer an online course that explores humanitarian leadership, management and topical issues critical to advancing humanitarian principles and alleviating suffering.

We recognize that it is difficult to acess quality online learning that focuses on leadership for humanitarians, there NNPHL has developed the NNPHL Online Course, which is publicly available at no cost.

It is our belief that anyone given the right tools can learn to improve their leadership skills. Our unique, self-guided online program is tailored to fit the needs of humanitarians, and is designed to improve humanitarian leadership, managment and technical skills.

RedR Australia’s Essentials of Humanitarian Practice training course teaches you everything you need to know about working within the modern humanitarian system and what it takes to respond to an international humanitarian crisis that involves a global response.

On this training course, you will learn the complexity of the international humanitarian relief system and the legal framework for humanitarian assistance. We will introduce you to the characteristics of natural hazards, conflict-induced emergencies, and the requirements for an effective humanitarian response, highlighting some of the dilemmas faced by humanitarians and aid workers.

During the training, you will learn about the various United Nations agencies that respond to disasters and the roles these agencies play in coordinating responses for various sectors such as health, water and sanitation and logistics.

You will discover how international non-government organisations work with these agencies to share information and data, to avoid duplication and ensure humanitarian aid reaches those who need it without causing harm.

We give you the opportunity to put the knowledge you gain into practice and to explore the team skills required to work effectively in the field.

Course Objectives

  • A comprehensive overview of issues, systems and practice related to working in disasters and humanitarian emergencies.
  • Increased depth of understanding of the context, history, foundations and new developments in humanitarian practice.

End date: 18 Feb 2024
Registration deadline: 12 Feb 2024

Aims and Objectives
